NAfME-Aligned Middle School Music Unit
This is a free, nine-lesson instructional unit designed for middle school general music, band, orchestra, and choir — grades 6, 7, and 8. No extra setup needed. This unit is built directly into Flat for Education and fully aligned to the NAfME National Core Arts Standards.
What makes this unit special is that it works as a complete learning journey, not just a collection of separate activities. Over the course of nine lessons, students will:
- Compose an original melody
- Develop it into a structured musical form
- Combine their work with classmates' compositions into a full ensemble piece
- Record a final performance
- Reflect on their own and each other's work
Every lesson comes with everything you need: the relevant NAfME strand and standard codes, a teacher implementation guide, a clear student task flow, and a built-in framework ready for assessment.

How to use it
Each lesson fits comfortably into a single 40–50 minute class period. Here are a few things worth knowing before you begin:
- Run the lessons in order. The unit builds on itself — the ensemble piece students record in Lesson 8 grows directly from the composition work they begin in Lesson 1.
- Lessons 3 and 6 include auto-graded worksheets that give you instant feedback on how your students are doing with rhythm and pitch literacy, right before they move into ensemble work. You'll know exactly where to offer extra support.
- Lessons 4 and 8 use real-time shared writing, meaning students compose together in the same score at the same time — a great opportunity for collaboration and peer learning.

Download the Teacher Companion before your first lesson. It contains everything you need to feel prepared: timing guidance for each section, differentiation options for all learners, and coaching questions to spark discussion.
