Choose which AI features you use
Last updated October 29, 2026
Every AI feature in Flat is optional. In your account settings, you choose which ones Flat can use with your account: all of them, everything except generative AI, or none.
Generative AI and other AI features
Flat sorts its AI features into two kinds, by what they give you back:
- Generative AI creates new music or content in response to your request. You ask, and it writes or edits something for you.
- Other AI features only convert, transcribe, translate or correct content you provide. What you get back is your own content in another form, with nothing added.
Some of these features run on the same kind of models as generative AI. What decides the kind is the result: PDF and photo import gives you back the music on the page, and a translation gives you back the same instructions in another language.
Scores made with generative AI can't be published in the community. Learn more.
Choose your AI features
Open your account settings, select AI features and pick an option. Your choice is saved right away and applies on all your devices.
| Feature | All AI features | No generative AI | No AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generative AI | |||
| Notation assistant | ✓ | — | — |
| AI apps like ChatGPT and Claude | ✓ | — | — |
| Other AI features | |||
| PDF and photo import | ✓ | ✓ | — |
| Automatic translations of assignment instructions | ✓ | ✓ | — |
This setting only turns features off. To use a feature, your plan also needs to include it: for example, the notation assistant and AI apps are part of Flat Power.
Default setting
- Flat accounts start with All AI features.
- Flat for Education accounts start with No generative AI. The notation assistant and AI apps are not available for school accounts, and if they become available, they stay off until you turn them on.
Until you pick an option, your account uses its default. Once you pick one, Flat keeps your choice.
What happens when you turn a feature off
- It disappears from Flat. You won't see it, or any offer to try it, in the editor or your library.
- AI apps you connected are paused, not removed. They can't reach your account while generative AI is off, and they work again as soon as you turn it back on, with no need to reconnect. To remove an app for good, revoke it in your account settings.
- Your past conversations with the notation assistant are kept. They come back if you turn the assistant on again.
- Your AI credits are kept. Turning features off doesn't remove or refund them.
- An import already in progress finishes. New imports from PDF or photo can't start.
What this setting doesn't cover
To protect the community, Flat runs automated safety checks on comments posted on public scores, for every account. This isn't a feature you use, so this setting doesn't change it.
Whatever you choose, Flat does not train AI on your scores. See AI is always your choice.
