3. How to create a music snippet
To compose a fully custom notation snippet, use the built-in editor.

Start a new snippet
Click New score snippet.
Choose your staves
Pick the stave you want to use.
Compose your music
Compose your music using the built-in notation tools — the same editor as in Flat for Education.
Insert into your document
When you're done, click Add to document to insert the snippet as an image into your file.
This makes it easy to embed custom music examples directly into your lessons, slides, or worksheets.
4. What you can create with Music Snippet
Music Snippet also includes three built-in tools designed to speed up worksheet and handout creation — no manual notation required.
Music symbol library
Sometimes you don't need a full staff — just a treble clef mid-sentence, a sharp sign next to a vocabulary word, or a time signature in a quiz question. The symbol library has you covered.

In the Music Snippet panel, open the Music Theory Symbols.
Browse by category — Clefs, Accidentals, Time Signatures, Notes and Rests — or search by name. Click any symbol to insert it directly into your document.
The symbol library is faster and more complete than Google's built-in Insert → Special characters, which is missing many music glyphs and can't place notes on a staff.
Empty staves
Need blank manuscript paper or a dictation exercise? You can now insert genuine blank staves in one step — no workarounds needed.

In the Music Snippet panel, choose the Empty Staves option and pick a layout:
| Layout option | Best for |
|---|---|
| Single measure, no barline | Open-ended composition prompts |
| Single measure, final barline | Fill-in-the-blank tasks or cadence exercises |
| Double barlines | Section dividers within a longer exercise |
| Start and end repeats | Exercises that use repeat notation |
| Four-measure line | Dictation, full-phrase exercises, or manuscript paper |
Because you choose the barline type and measure count upfront, the structure of the task is already defined before a student writes a note. Want a four-bar answer? Give them four bars.
Scale generator
The scale generator lets you insert a correctly notated major or minor scale in seconds, with the right key signature already in place.

In the Music Snippet panel, select the Scales option.
Switch between Major and Minor using the tab toggle, then pick a key from the list.
Stack C, G, and D major scales vertically on a single handout. Under each one, add a blank line for students to write how many sharps the key signature has and circle the note that changed from the scale above. Three scales, built in under a minute.
5. How to access and organize your snippet library
To view your previously created snippets, click Snippets Library in the Music Snippet menu. This lets you easily revisit and re-insert any notation example you've made.
All scores created through Music Snippet are automatically saved to your Flat for Education account in a dedicated Music Snippet folder.

The Snippets Library is only available if you've connected your Flat for Education account to Music Snippet. Make sure you're logged in to access your saved snippets.
