Import and edit existing scores and tabs

Easily import your existing sheet music and tablatures into Flat to edit, share, and collaborate. Our platform supports a wide range of file formats, making it simple to get started.

1. Import a PDF

You can import a PDF of your sheet music and turn it into a fully editable score. Flat automatically reads the music on the page and converts it into notation you can edit, saving you time and effort.

To import your PDF, go to your library, click on "Create a score" and then "Import PDF".

PDF import pages, credits, and plans

PDF import is available to all users. Each paid plan includes a monthly allowance of PDF pages, and you can buy extra pages as one-time credit packs whenever you need them. Credits don't expire as long as your account remains active.

See the PDF import plans and pricing for current page allowances and credit-pack prices.

What can be imported, and how to get the best results

Flat reads standard music notation from clean PDFs and scans, and now also from photos taken with the Flat mobile app. To see exactly which notations are supported and how to get the cleanest conversion:

2. Import MusicXML and MIDI files

We support MusicXML (xml / mxl) and MIDI (mid / midi) files, and recommend using MusicXML files if you import sheet music from another software (you will get the exact music notation imported into Flat).

You can also import the following non-standard file formats. Please note we don't offer official support for them; they are provided to help you import your existing files.

  • MuseScore: *.mscz
  • Guitar Pro files: *.gp (v7 and v8), *.gpx (v6), *.gp5, *.gp4, *.gp3
  • Power Tab Editor: *.ptb
  • Encore: *.enc
