How to add a dal segno in Flat
Last updated September 16, 2026
A dal segno in Flat is the marking that indicates the player has to jump to the segno marking. Flat places it on the measure you choose and completes it for you: al coda or al fine is added automatically when the score already carries a fine marking or a coda section.
Which tool adds a dal segno?
The dal segno tool sits in the Measure section of the Notation tab, in the editor's left panel. It applies to the measure you select - the one after which the performer jumps back to the segno - and engraves the D.S. marking there.

What is a dal segno marking?
The dal segno marking indicates the player has to jump to the segno marking. It is written at the point where the jump happens, so the performer plays up to that measure, returns to the segno sign placed earlier in the score, and continues from there until a fine or a to coda tells them what to do next.
How do I add a dal segno marking?
Open the Notation tab in the left panel, select the measure after which the performer has to jump to the segno, then click the Dal segno tool under Measure. The al coda or al fine will automatically be added if there is a fine marking, or a coda section.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a segno in the score first?
Yes. The dal segno sends the performer to the segno sign, so the score needs one for the jump to have a destination. Place the segno where the repeated passage starts, then add the dal segno at the point where the performer should go back.
What is the difference between a dal segno and a da capo?
A dal segno sends the performer back to the segno sign, wherever you placed it. A da capo sends them back to the very beginning of the score instead. Both are written at the measure where the jump happens and both complete themselves with al coda or al fine.
What does D.S. al coda mean?
It means the performer jumps back to the segno, plays on, and leaves again at the to coda marking to finish in the coda section. Flat adds the al coda automatically once the score contains a coda section.
